There are only four core hairstyles.

That’s it. Four. Yet so many of us get confused when getting a haircut.

Knowing what will suit you the best can resolve this confusion. The right cut and the right care that actually work for you become so much easier to find.

Keep reading, and I’ll walk you through each one.

Different Hair Types

Hair type affects how these haircuts work for you.

Hair TypeDescription
StraightLies flat with no curl or wave pattern
WavyForms S-shaped patterns with gentle curves
CurlyCreates tight spirals and defined ringlets
CoilyVery tight zigzag patterns with maximum texture
ThickHigh density with lots of strands
ThinLower density with fewer strands

Knowing your hair type is one part of getting a great cut; it also helps you select from the seven basic haircuts if you want more options than the four core haircuts.

The 4 Types of Hairstyles: A Simple Breakdown Guide

Hair comes in more types than most people think. But once you break it down, it’s actually pretty straightforward.

Apart from the following, you can also consider the basic haircuts.

1. The 0 Degree, or Bob

The 0 Degree haircut, also called the Bob, is cut straight across at one level. This is one of those hairstyles that looks amazing from the back.

It’s clean, sharp, and one of the most classic cuts around.

  • Hair Type: Works best on straight and fine hair
  • Face Shape: Suits oval, round, and heart-shaped faces
  • Bangs: Blunt, straight-across bangs pair perfectly
  • Fringes: A full, heavy fringe works great here

2. The 45 Degree, or Wedge

The 45 Degree cut, or Wedge, angles the hair diagonally. It’s longer at the front and shorter at the back.

I find this one gives a lot of shape without much effort.

  • Hair Type: Works well on straight to slightly wavy hair
  • Face Shape: Flatters oval and square faces
  • Bangs: Side-swept bangs complement this cut well
  • Fringes: A diagonal or asymmetric fringe suits this cut

3. The 90 Degree, or Layered

The 90 Degree cut is all about layers. Hair is pulled straight out and cut, creating lots of movement.

It’s the kind of cut that looks great with almost no styling effort.

  • Hair Type: Great for thick, wavy, or curly hair
  • Face Shape: Works on most face shapes
  • Bangs: Soft, wispy bangs work beautifully here
  • Fringes: A curtain fringe is a strong choice

4. The 180 Degree, or Shag

The 180 Degree cut, or Shag, is bold and textured. Hair is cut with heavy layering and lots of movement.

Honestly, I prefer the hairstyles that look messy in the best way.

  • Hair Type: Suits wavy, curly, and thick hair well
  • Face Shape: Best for oval, long, and heart-shaped faces
  • Bangs: Choppy or curtain bangs are the go-to here
  • Fringes: A heavy, tousled fringe works perfectly

Tips to Maintain Any Hairstyle

Keeping a hairstyle looking good doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve picked up a few simple habits over time that really help.

  • Trim your hair every 6 to 8 weeks. Regular trims keep split ends at bay and keep your shape looking fresh and clean.
  • Use the right shampoo for your hair type. The wrong one strips moisture, leaving your hair flat and dull.
  • Don’t wash your hair every single day. It removes natural oils your hair actually needs to stay healthy.
  • Always apply a conditioner after shampooing. It keeps strands soft, smooth, and much easier to manage day to day.
  • Protect your hair from heat before styling. A good heat protectant stops damage before it even starts.

Wrap Up

The four cuts, Bob, Wedge, Layered, and Shag, cover just about every hair situation out there.

Each one works differently depending on your face shape, texture, and how much time you want to spend styling.

So take a good look at your hair. Figure out which type fits you best and go from there.
